Tahoe Snowboarding

January - April 2014

Story by Dave Paola April 22nd, 2014

First weekend

Apparently I chose the wrong year for a season pass, as there was little snow until mid January. Even so, we made it to Heavenly for a quick weekend. Also needed to use my new GoPro. Caught a good video of myself wiping out on a nice, flat, smooth catwalk.

Disaster

The subsequent trip shows few photos, because I spent very little time on the snow. My friend’s car broke down, along with a fiasco with some tire chains. Spent maybe 4 hours snowboarding at Kirkwood (incredibly wet snow) before retiring to the lodge for drinks.

last weekend

Heard there would be one last chance to make it out, so we hit Kirkwood backside one more time. It was sunny, the snow was only a little wet, and I got incredibly sunburned.

I challenged myself a bit on this trip by heading down between two large rock outcroppings. It wasn’t as steep as The Wall but the rocks made it more interesting. To get back, we took the shelf at the top of the backside all the way across and looked down over the cornice that leads to the front side. Wasn’t feeling adventurous enough to take that run, but I’m committed to doing it next year.

Footnote: Although I've been snowboarding since childhood, this was my first Tahoe season pass. Taken in Kirkwood and Heavenly
